Morganton Skatepark located in Morganton, NC became the 540 Tony Hawk Grant Recipient this past November. Another Pillar Artisan Skatepark, this was truly a community effort. Local skaters pushed for a Skatepark for years and with the help of the Parks and Recreation Department, their dream became a reality. The city allocated $180,000 for the Skatepark, which includes donations from the Morganton Recreation Foundation, Morganton Optimist Club, and Morganton Service League. With the additional $15,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation and the City donating in-kind services during construction, the final design was budgeted at $250,000.
Elliot Lytle, Owner of Pop Shop Skateboards, reported by The News Herald - Mad props to Mr. Winkler and the City! They did a great job of getting us the most for our money. The budget wasn't that big as parks go and I think we got a little more than we paid for.
The Tony Hawk Foundation offers grants from $1,000 to $25,000, twice a year. The next deadline is January 10th, 2018 - for awards in February 2018. For more information on the Tony Hawk Foundation click here.
Congrats to the City of Morganton, Pop Shop Skateboards, and all the locals.
